10 Claude Code Tips & Tricks for Power Users
After using Claude Code daily for the past few months, I’ve discovered some powerful features and workflows that aren’t immediately obvious. Here are my top 10 tips to supercharge your Claude Code experience.
1. Custom Aliases for Common Tasks
Create shell aliases for frequently used commands:
# Add to your .bashrc or .zshrc
alias cc="claude-code"
alias ccc="claude-code chat"
alias cct="claude-code task"
alias ccr="claude-code review"
Now you can quickly start a chat with just ccc or run a task with cct "your task here".
2. Project-Specific Configurations
Use .claude/config.json in your project root for project-specific settings:
{
"model": "claude-sonnet-4",
"temperature": 0.7,
"context_files": [
"README.md",
"ARCHITECTURE.md"
],
"ignore_patterns": [
"node_modules/**",
"*.log",
".env*"
]
}
Claude Code will automatically use these settings when run from that directory.
3. Pipe Output for Quick Analysis
Pipe command output directly to Claude for instant analysis:
git diff | claude-code task "summarize these changes"
npm run test 2>&1 | claude-code task "identify failing tests and suggest fixes"
docker ps | claude-code task "check for any potential issues"
4. Code Review Automation
Set up a git hook for AI-assisted code review:
# .git/hooks/pre-commit
#!/bin/bash
git diff --cached | claude-code review --auto-fix
This runs Claude Code review on staged changes before each commit.
5. Context Window Optimization
For large codebases, use context summaries to stay within token limits:
claude-code chat --context-mode summary --scan src/
This generates a high-level summary of your codebase rather than including full file contents.
6. Multi-File Refactoring
Refactor across multiple files in one command:
claude-code task "rename the 'User' model to 'Account' across all files" \\
--files "src/**/*.{js,ts}" \\
--apply
The --apply flag automatically writes changes to disk after confirmation.
7. Learning Mode
Use Claude Code as an interactive learning tool:
claude-code explain src/complex-algorithm.js --verbose
This provides detailed explanations of code with line-by-line breakdowns.
8. Template Generation
Create custom templates for repetitive tasks:
# Create a template
claude-code template create api-endpoint
# Use the template
claude-code template use api-endpoint --name users --methods GET,POST
9. Diff-Driven Development
Work with Claude using diff mode for precise changes:
claude-code chat --mode diff
Claude will show proposed changes as unified diffs, making it easy to review and apply specific modifications.
10. Session Persistence
Save and restore chat sessions:
# Save current session
claude-code save-session refactoring-auth-module
# Resume later
claude-code load-session refactoring-auth-module
Perfect for long-running refactoring projects or when context switching.
Bonus: Keyboard Shortcuts
In interactive mode, these shortcuts boost productivity:
Ctrl+R: Search command historyCtrl+L: Clear screen (keeps context)Ctrl+D: Exit sessionTab: Autocomplete file paths↑/↓: Navigate history
